Tampa Convention Center Room: 18-19
Lindsay Samuels
Amber Boughton
Everything I need to know about managing student behavior I DIDN’T learn in college! Music Educators are trained to be experts in music and pedagogy, but how many of us were truly prepared to handle the challenge of behavior management in the real world of teaching? After four years at a school that utilizes William Glasser’s Choice Theory as its approach to understanding why children act as they do, I have a whole new set of tools for perceiving and managing student behaviors. Attendees of this workshop will walk away with invaluable changes in their perception of human behavior, as well as tools to help them better connect with their students, build relationships among students, and help students become better people by taking responsibility for their own behavior choices.

Instrumental music teachers are becoming part of the solution in addressing literacy and other curricular issues in our schools. This session will explore and discuss different strategies that can be used in rehearsals to help students acquire and facilitate new knowledge making an even stronger argument of the importance of teaching the whole child.

Josue Rodriguez
This session will focus on the strategies needed to fully include and accommodate the special needs learner within the mainstream Elementary music curriculum giving each child, whether special needs or not, a stake in the educational process. Development and the use of peer instruction will be a focus.

From Choice “Theory” to Practical Application
Tampa Convention Center Room: 18-19
Lindsay Samuels
Amber Boughton
Anyone can attend! Modern educators often refer to the challenge of teaching the current generation of kids, and I have found that Choice Theory is one solution. In this follow-up session to Choice Theory: A Different Psychology for Behavior Management in Band, Choir, Orchestra and General Music, attendees will have guided hands-on practice in applying the concepts learned in the previous session. Advanced concepts in the psychology of Choice Theory will be taught as well. Through interactive practice with real-world, relevant scenarios, educators will have the opportunity to practice the techniques learned in the first session as a preparation for use in the classroom.

Robert Todd
Lu Anne Leone
Come learn about a group assessment model already in place that promises rewarding results combining musicianship, masterclass and an FCAT / Florida Writes! based evaluation. Create a significant, positive teaching and learning experience for directors, students...even administrators and community dignitaries. This project outlines a countywide assessment that can be adapted to many situations. Be the springboard for assessment in your environment!

3:15 PM-4:00 PM
Musical Stone Soup - It's not what you have, it's what you do with it!
Tampa Convention Center Room: 24-25
Mary Catherine Salo
This session shares best practices for creating and maintaining a quality school music program in less-than-optimal settings. With the social, economic and cultural diversity so many of us face in our communities today how do we recruit, retain, interest, fund and, in our spare time, inspire our students? This session will share ideas used and directions of what one "sub---urban" music program (without a feeder!!) has done to stay relevant in Florida music education for the past 15 years of changing times.

3:15 PM-4:00 PM
The Secondary Music Classroom and the Special Needs Student
Tampa Convention Center Room: 15-16
Josue Rodriguez
With the need to teach the entire population of the school, many secondary teachers find it essential to become proficient in delivering effective instructional models for the special needs learner. This session will explore proven techniques for not only engaging the special learner in the traditional secondary music classroom, but will also make all learners essential members of any music program.
