Re: Questions

The method book you would use would depend on the level your students and what your goals are for them.  For example," Exercises for Ensemble Drill" by Fussell emphasizes scales and technical development in one section and reinforces rhythm recognition in another.  I use these books with my younger group because they need to develop those skills.  I also use the Tone and Technique through Chorales and Etudes by Ployar and Zepp.  These books is something I use as a part of their daily routine in order to demonstrate to them their need to develop thier technnique and the importance of understanding scales and key signatures.

Remember that these books are tools you use to create better musicans in your playing ensemble.

Check out The Habits of Musicianship by Bob Duke and James Byo.  It's freely distributed on their website.  It's not "pretty" like a lot of the published books, but it takes a different approach to learning musicianship that seems to make a lot more sense.  Read through the introduction page for more information.

For High School bands, I really like theSixteen Bach Chorales arranged by Mayhew Lake, the 3D Band Book by Ployhar & Zepp, & T.I.P.P.S. For Band.  I'm not sure if any of them are still in print.

None of these are step-by-step 'how to be a band director' books--I don't think such a thing exists.
